Description

SIGNERS OF THE TIMES: Governor HANCOCK certifies fellow Signer ELBRIDGE GERRY as a Massachusetts representative

Massachusetts statesman, patriot, and first Signer of the Declaration of Independence (1737–1793). Manuscript DS as governor, one page, 7.75 x 12.5, November 4, 1790. A document certifying that Elbridge Gerry “was chosen by the people of this State, legally qualified therefor, a Representative to represent them in the Congress of the United States of America.” Countersigned at the conclusion by John Avery as secretary. Gerry (1744–1814) was a Signer of the Declaration of Independence from Massachusetts who later served as vice president under James Madison. His name entered the language as a result of his support of politically advantageous redistricting, which became known as “gerrymandering.” In very good condition, with intersecting folds, scattered staining to text and seal (slightly touching Hancock’s signature), and a well-done repair to a small tear at center of document, not affecting any text. Hancock’s striking, familiar signature measures some 3.5″ in length. Auction LOA John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and R&R COA.
