Description

Third Chief Justice of the United States and delegate to the Constitutional Congress (1777–84) who later submitted the amendments which became the Bill of Rights. As a member of the Committee of the Pay Table, Ellsworth was one of the five men who supervised Connecticut’s war expenditures. Revolutionary War-dated DS, signed “O. Ellsworth,” one page, 8.5 x 6.75, June 9, 1777. Pay order issued to “Elisha Hewit…for assisting home from Camp invalids of the Army…and charge the State.” Signed at the conclusion by Ellsworth. In very good condition, with partial separations and slight paper loss along folds, some scattered light toning and soiling, and some show-through from docketing on reverse. R&R COA.
