Description

Civil War–dated endorsement from America’s most storied veteran

American soldier (1839–1925) who earned a niche in military history as the only man to serve as an officer in the Civil War, Indian Wars, and Spanish-American War. Though the nearly eighty-year-old Miles volunteered to serve during World War I, his offer was declined by Woodrow Wilson. War-dated handwritten endorsement on a 3.5 x 8 off-white slip, clipped from a larger letter or document, dated March 2, 1865. Written from the 2nd Division Headquarters, Miles writes, “Respectfully forwarded approved & earnestly recommended for the good of the service. Lt. Wood is an accomplished and worthy officer.” Signed at the conclusion, “Nelson A. Miles, Bt. Major Genl, comdg.” In fine condition. R&R COA.
