Composer. She studied at the Conservatoire (1897-1904), where she won several prizes, and went on to write many vocal and instrumental works, winning second prize at the Grand Prix de Rome in 1908 for her cantata, La Sirène (The Siren). After 1918 she devoted herself to teaching, first at home, and later at the Conservatoire and the Ecole Normale de Musique, where she had international influence. Impressive archive of materials from and relating to Boulanger. Highlight of the archive is five ALSs dating from 1938 and 1939 from Boulanger all written to an American admirer. In her letter dated December 7, 1939, Boulanger writes, “Life is here deeper, simpler than you could imagine - everyone realizes that…everything is in question - but one knows no one has not wanted the war, one has done a little more than the possible to avoid it…one faces the tragedy with shame for great countries having lost their honour!” Also included are: an unsigned but inscribed Lili Boulanger memorial program, inscribed by Nadia; several ALSs from one of Boulanger’s students or assistants, detailing Boulanger’s activities; two unsigned hardcover biographies, a 1987 newspaper article looking back at her life; and an original candid 2 x 3 snapshot of Boulanger and Howard Hinners. In fine overall condition. R&R COA.
