American astronaut. He has been into space three times: as co-pilot of Gemini 9A in June 1966; as lunar module pilot of Apollo 10 in May 1969; and as commander of Apollo 17 in December, 1972. In that final lunar landing mission, Cernan became ‘the last man on the moon’ since he was the last to re-enter the Apollo Lunar Module during its third and final extra-vehicular activity (EVA). Flown 6 x 4 American flag carried into lunar orbit aboard the Apollo 17 lunar module. Cernan has added his handwritten flight certification directly on the flag: “Flown to the moon, Apollo XVII, Dec. 7-19, 1972, Gene Cernan.” Nicely suede matted and framed with a photo of the lunar module on the moon’s surface, to an overall size of 16 x 22.5. In fine condition, with an light overall shade of toning to white stripes of flag, not detracting from Cernan’s bold signature. Apollo-flown flags bearing an integral authentication signature from a mission participant are quite uncommon and avidly sought. COA Scott Cornish and R&R COA.
