The doctor who attempted to save Lincoln and Garfield

American military officer and U.S. Surgeon General (1817–1883) who attempted to save Abraham Lincoln and James Garfield after they were shot, and who was in attendance at Lincoln’s deathbed. ALS signed “J. K. Barnes,” one page both sides, 5 x 7.5, personal letterhead, September 17, 1873. Barnes writes to Franklin Philip. In part: “In acknowledging your invitation to the Banquet in honor of … Governor Cooke on Saturday next—I have most sincerely to regret that unavoidable absence from the city will deprive me of the pleasure of being present….” In fine condition, with a hint of mild scattered soiling.
