Quirkily brilliant entertainer (1919–1962) whose freewheeling sense of humor and sense of visual style made him of the most distinctive personalities in the early days of television. He died in a 1962 auto crash while driving the notoriously “unsafe at any speed” Chevrolet Corvair.
