Description

Vintage pencil signature, “Thos. A. Edison,” on an off-white 2.75 x 2 card. Accompanied by a TLS of transmittal from Edison’s secretary, Wm. H. Meadowcroft, one page, 8.5 x 11, Edison Laboratory letterhead, September 27, 1922. In part: “We take pleasure in inclosing a card bearing Mr. Edison’s autograph, as requested. Mr. Edison wishes us to say that it would be an extremely difficult matter to get a record containing different solo voices singing a perfect scale. It is practically impossible to find a voice having perfect tones all through its register…. Mr. Edison has had in mind the idea of such a record, but has not made one up to this time. It scarcely seems worth while as the public demand for a record of this character would be so small that it would not pay to go to the great expense.” The card is in good condition, with a few chips, surface marks, and impressions, complete vertical tear just touching first letter (tape-repaired from reverse), and somewhat fragile vertical crack and partial separation through first name. The letter is very good, with mailing fold through signature, light soiling and handling wear, and small rust stains and pinholes. R&R COA.
