Description

Concluding the French-American Claims Committee

Partially printed DS as president, one page, 7.5 x 9.25, February 7, 1883. Hayes authorizes the Secretary of State to affix the Seal of the United States to “my full power to conclude a convention for the extension of the term of the French and American Claims Commission.” The Commission named had originally been organized as a means for French natives in America at the time of the Civil War to file claims for losses and seizures resulting from the war. The document itself is an interesting early example of facsimile duplication, i.e., the body of the text is printed in “handwriting” rather than in the more usual type of the period. Matted and framed with a photo to an overall size of 18.75 x 14.75. Two light vertical folds (away from signature), otherwise fine, fresh, bright condition. Auction LOA John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and R&R COA.
