Description

From aboard the Bainbridge

Admiral (1900–1986) who oversaw the creation of America’s fleet of nuclear-powered naval vessels. TLS signed “H. G. Rickover,” one page, 8 x 10.5, U.S.S. Bainbridge letterhead, “At Sea, North Atlantic,” September 2, 1962. Rickover sends a detailed informational letter to Palmer Hoyt, editor of the Denver Post. In part: “We are returning from the sea trials of the U.S.S. Bainbridge, our first nuclear-powered guided missile destroyer leader…. The Bainbridge with her nuclear power plant can steam continuously at full speed for 150,000 miles without refueling compared with about 3,000 miles for conventionally powered destroyer leaders…. Using available ration dense foods, she can sever her lines of supply for periods of 4 to 6 months and steam in areas where heretofore only forces with supply trains have been able to operate. The Bainbridge may well become the capital ship of the future.” Accompanied by the original mailing envelope, which bears a commemorative cachet. Intersecting mailing folds (vertical fold touching last name), otherwise fine, clean condition. R&R COA.
