Description

INTO THE SUNSET: A “damn busy” WAYNE promises to “get together” for what would be the Duke’s last interview

TLS, one page, 6 x 8.25, personal letterhead, April 15, 1977. Wayne writes to Bill Kelly. In full: “I am certainly not trying to avoid giving you an interview, but I have been doing so many charity, goodwill, and public affair things that I am way behind in my work and I am just damn busy. If you would be so kind to send me a note late in the summer, I see no reason why we cannot get together.” The original recipient was a prolific journalist and author who was finally granted an interview with Wayne on November 28, 1978; Wayne died on June 11 of the following year. The interview, Wayne’s last, was published in South Bay magazine in July 1981 and in Kelly’s book/CD Empty Saddles. Accompanied by several pieces of documentation, including copies of the interview as published in the magazine and book, a CD copy of Empty Saddles, and color copies of approximately 24 photos taken at Wayne’s home on the day of the interview. A hint of very subtle handling wear, otherwise fine condition. PSA/DNA Auction LOA and R&R COA.
