Description

On the “stupid manuals” of the Air Force: “I am glad I’m in the Navy”

American admiral (1885–1966) who led the Allied naval forces in the Pacific in World War II. ALS signed “C. W. Niimitz,” one page both sides, 8 x 10.5, personal letterhead, February 18, 1960. Nimitz writes to “Dear Hopwood.” In part: “There has just arrived … your package containing two of the largest, golden pineapples I have ever seen. And their fragrance fills our home with the heavenly scent one gets when driving thru the pineapple fields of Oahu…. I particularly thank you for remembering my birthday with such an appropriate gift…. I am being overwhelmed with mail as a result of the Navy Department’s decision to observe my birthday with nationwide publicity…. As I read the papers—and the bad publicity being collected by the Air Force with the various stupid ‘manuals’ they have recently issued—about how enlisted men should perform certain duties I am glad I’m in the Navy….” Stapled to the letter is a mimeographed “Anonymous poem received recently by the Nimitz Family in a Christmas card,” signed at the top edge “This may amuse you! CWN.” In fine condition, with staple as noted and two file holes to top edge, touching two words. R&R COA.
