Description

“NOT ALL THE RATS I SEE ARE DELIRIUM TREMENS”: In the midst of work on his first “Narnia” novel, LEWIS boozily illustrates the difference between “poetical experience” and knowledge

Influential Irish author and scholar (1898–1963) best known for his works on Christian theology (most notably, the novel The Screwtape Letters) and for his much-beloved, seven-book juvenile fantasy series The Chronicles of Narnia. ALS signed “C. S. L.,” one page, 6 x 6.75, personal letterhead, December 8, 1949. Lewis writes to “Wolf”[?] In full: “Sorry I’ve taken so long about this. I am bad at parcels. I didn’t maintain that all the things you regard as knowledge are poetical experiences, but said that I suspected when you had a poetical experience you regarded it as knowledge: i.e., all your A is not disguised B, but some of your B is disguised as A. (Not all the rats I see are Delirium Tremens, but when I have D. T. I often mistake it for real rats.) But we’d better leave this till we meet again—for I hope you’ll repeat yr. visit next term.” At the time of writing, Lewis was in the midst of work on The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe, published in the following year, the first and best-known book in his Chronicles of Narnia. A hint of very subtle wrinkling at right edge, otherwise very fine, fresh condition. Colorful content from an elusive literary giant! Auction LOA John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and R&R COA.
