Dynamic, often belligerent, highly influential leader of the Soviet Union (1894–1971) from 1953, when he came to power upon the death of Stalin, to 1964, when he was forced to retire by his own party. Typed DS, signed in red pencil, one page, 7 x 11, March 28, 1944. An official communication to Stalin headed “On Comrade Vatutin’s state of health.” In full (translated): “I am transferring the report on Comrade Vatutin’s surgery, which I received from the Assistant Surgeon General of the Red Army Lieutenant-General Shamov.” Nikolai Vatutin (1901–1944) earned a reputation as one of the most skilled Soviet commanders during World War II, leading his troops to decisive victories at Stalingrad, Kursk, and elsewhere. Injured by an insurgent attack in late February 1944, he died in the hospital on April 14, less than three weeks after Khruschev sent his report.
