Stanza from The Battlefield

Highly regarded American poet (1794–1878) of such much-anthologized works as “Thanatopsis.” Apart from his literary activities, Bryant was also an ardent abolitionist and one of the founders of the Republican Party. AQS on an off-white sheet. Bryant pens the ninth stanza of his poem entitled The Battle-Field. In full, “Truth, crushed to earth, shall rise again; Th' eternal years of God are hers; But Error, wounded, writhes in pain, And dies among his worshippers.” Signed at the conclusion, “William Cullen Bryant, January 10th, 1873.” Cloth matted and framed with a seated portrait, to an overall size of 16.5 x 11.25. In fine condition, with a bit of scattered light soiling. R&R COA.
