The escape artist as reader

TLS signed “Houdini,” one page, 7.25 x 4.5, personal letterhead, March 17, 1924. Houdini writes to Mr. Hart in New York. In full: “Will you kindly send me a copy of book entitled ‘The Life of Dan Rice’ by Maria Ward Brown—$3. which you advertised in the Publishers Weekly. Thanks. Will send you check for same on receipt of the book.” The subject of the book in question (1823–1900) was an enormously popular clown and entertainer who was the model for Thomas Nast’s portrayal of “Uncle Sam” and who ran for various political offices, including the presidency. Framed and matted with a photo and engraved plaque to an overall size of 22 x 15.75. In very good condition, with vertical fold and uneven toning touching signature, wrinkling, and trimmed edges.
