Description

The American grain, in a manner of speaking

Esteemed American politician and orator (1782–1852) who was a longtime member of Congress and who served as Secretary of State under Harrison and Tyler. ALS signed “Danl. Webster,” three pages on two adjoining sheets, 4.25 x 7, June 12, 1842. Webster writes to Mr. Handley. In part: “Allow me … to present to you, in this way, my friend, Mr. Prescott Hall, of the City of New York. He hopes to be in L’pool on the 16 prox., & I am sure you will be there, if health allows. I wish I could be with you; for I remember few assemblages with more pleasure than the meeting at Oxford in 1839. Our season, so far, is rather cool, but the wheat & grass crops look finely. ‘Corn,’ by which we always mean ‘maize,’ a good deal behind hand at present….” Light scattered foxing and handling wear, otherwise fine condition. R&R COA.
