An agreement wherein Welles agrees to direct the play Native Son by Paul Green and Richard Wright, “[and] to devote [his] best efforts and skill to the direction of the said play,” for which Welles is to receive $3,000 plus 1.5% of the gross receipts. At the time of signing, Welles had only recently completed production of Citizen Kane, which finally premiered (after delays caused by the influence of “Kane’s” model, William Randolph Hearst) on May 1, 1941. The Welles-directed production of Native Son opened at the St. James Theatre on March 24 and ran for 114 performances. A few light wrinkles, otherwise fine condition. R&R COA.
