Description

Royal uncle: Victoria approves military mourning for the King of Hanover

Third-person ALS, signed in the text “the Queen,” one page both sides, 4.5 x 7, black-bordered mourning letterhead, November 23, 1851. Victoria writes to the Duke of Wellington. In full: “The Queen has rec’d Field Marshal the Duke of Wellington’s letter of yesterday & approves that a general order for the officers of her Army to wear mourning for the late King of Hanover, sh[ou]ld be issued, similar to the one wh[ich] was issued on the occasion of the death of the Duke of Cambridge.” The late king was a son of George III of England and, therefore, a blood uncle of Victoria. In very good condition, with light soiling and handling wear, vertical crease, and faint show-through. R&R COA.
