Scottish author (1859–1930) whose stories featuring fictional detective Sherlock Holmes revolutionized the genre of crime fiction. Holmes himself would eventually earn a place among the most familiar and durable characters in the annals of English literature, and his exploits would inspire countless incarnations on stage and screen. ANS signed “A. Conan Doyle,” one page on a preprinted 5.25 x 3.25 reply postcard from the Dramatists’ Club, no date [circa 1914–1918?]. After stroking a “multiple choice” phrase indicating that he cannot attend an upcoming meeting, Doyle adds in his own hand: “I have a chance of going to the front & shall probably be away for some time.” In very good condition, with a touch of mild soiling, skinning to top edge of address side, and small loss to top edge. The faults are confined to the blank top margin and do not affect the printed text or Doyle’s dark, clear writing in any way. R&R COA.
