Description

EXPRESSING THEMSELVES: Wells and Fargo sign a stock certificate

Businessmen Henry Wells (1805–1878) and William Fargo (1818–1881) founded the American Express Company in 1850 and the Wells Fargo Company in 1851. By capitalizing on the burgeoning need for express and banking services, both men (and their companies) came to number among the greatest success stories in the commercial development of the American west—and, indeed, became still-familiar household words. Partially printed DS, one page both sides, 11.75 x 8, April 23, 1863. An handsomely engraved certificate for one share of capital stock in the American Express Company, issued to Alexander Thompson of Aurora, signed “Henry Wells” as President and “Wm. G. Fargo” as Secretary. In very good condition, with a few unobtrusive pinholes and tiny edge tears, mild scattered toning and rippling, light vertical folds touching signatures, and slight trimming to left edge. The signatures are clear and dark. Auction LOA John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and R&R COA.
