Description

Glowing endorsement for Bacon

Influential Scottish-born Victorian philosopher, essayist, and historian (1795–1881). ALS signed “T. Carlyle,” three pages on two adjoining sheets, 5 x 6.5, April 7, 1862. Scarce letter to James Spedding. In part, “I have been in the Bacon up and down…and trust to read it all with complete deliberation…a more honestly done bit of work I do not anywhere know…I prize my copy very much; and keep it as a memorial, salutary and dear to me in a good many respects.” Spedding was a British author and editor, chiefly known as the editor of the works of Francis Bacon. In very good condition, with vertical crease through both pages, light separation along bisecting horizontal fold and a couple trivial edge tears. R&R COA.
