American lawyer (1841–1882) who, frustrated in his attempt to secure an ambassadorship, assassinated President James Garfield in 1881. Ink signature, “Charles Guiteau, Oct. 12, 1881,” on a lightly lined off-white 4.5 x 2 slip. Guiteau shot Garfield on July 2; the president finally succumbed to complications on September 19.
