“A GLORY IN HIS BOSOM”: HOWE pens the stirring finale from her classic patriotic anthem

Author, suffragette, dramatist, poet, and biographer (1819–1910), best remembered as the lyricist of “Battle Hymn of the Republic.” AQS, the last stanza from “Battle Hymn of the Republic,” on an off-white 7.75 x 3 sheet, signed “Julia Ward Howe.” The text reads, in full: “In the beauty of the lilies Christ was born across the sea/With a glory in his bosom that transfigures you and me/As he died to make men holy, let us die to make men free/While God is marching on!” Matted and framed with a portrait engraving and explanatory plaque to an overall size of 15 x 22. A hint of mild soiling with a few faint spots, and two light vertical folds, otherwise fine condition. Scarce and desirable! R&R COA.
