British general (born 1833) who, in 1860, crushed the Taiping Rebellion in China, earning the nickname “Chinese.” Later appointed Governor General of the Sudan, he traveled to Egypt in 1884 to organize the defense of Khartoum against a rebel uprising and was killed there on January 26, 1885, two days before a relief force arrived. Ink signature, “Your affectionate brother, C. G. Gordon,” on an off-white 3 x 1.5 slip, clipped from the closing of a letter. Triple matted and framed with a portrait of Gordon and a name plaque, to an overall size of 18.5 x 15. In fine condition, with a light horizontal fold through tops of a couple of letters. R&R COA.
