ALS signed “W. C. Bryant,” one page, 4.5 x 7.5, October 17, 1877. Bryant writes to Dr. J. G. Holland. In full: “I send you with this letter a little poem which my brother the author would like to see in Scribner’s Monthly. But I should be sorry to believe that you inserted it because it was sent by me. The lines seem to me pretty well done, but I may be blinded by my relationship to the author; and unless you think it quite worthy of a place in the Magazine, do not, I beg, scruple to decline publishing it.” Matted and framed with a period engraving to an overall size of 14.25 x 11.75. In very good condition, with light toning at edges and a few scattered spots. R&R COA.
