Description

Writing in the year of the Liebeslieder Waltzes “I am sorry if I appeared to be unfriendly, but sometimes I need to be that way in Vienna”

Famed German composer (1833–1897) whose works in the Classical spirit, written in the midst of the Romantic era, take a place among the most enduring music of the nineteenth century. Among his best-known works are four symphonies, numerous concerti, all manner of chamber and keyboard works, and the large-scale choral masterpiece German Requiem. ALS in German, signed “J. Brahms,” one page both sides, 5.75 x 9, personal letterhead, July 1874. Brahms writes to an unspecified young woman. In part (translated): “I am very sorry that you have confidence in someone who doesn’t deserve it. My summer was restless and I need to enjoy the accommodation I found in ‘Rüschlikon am Zürcher See.’ I still feel compelled to travel at this time to the ‘Züricher Musikfest.’ I am sorry if I appeared to be unfriendly, but sometimes I need to be that way in Vienna. I don’t have to assure you that I regret what happened. Give my best regards to Mr. [?] and my deep respect.” Accompanied by an unsigned period cabinet photo of Brahms by C. Brasch. Very subtle show-through, a few faint spots, and a touch of handling wear, otherwise fine condition. Auction LOA John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and R&R COA.
