Color vintage glossy 20 x 16 photo of the 1961 World Champion New York Yankees, signed in the large lower border in black ballpoint by thirty-six members of the team. Signers include: Roger Maris, Mickey Mantle, Whitey Ford, Yogi Berra, Tony Kubek, Elston Howard, Tom Tresh, Jim Bouton, Jack Reed, John Sain, Frank Crosetti, Clete Boyer, Jim Coates, Don Seger, Ralph Houk, Moose Skowron, Rollie Sheldon, Luis Arroyo, Bobby Richardson, Bill Stafford, Tex Clevenger, John Blanchard, Spud Murray, Ralph Terry and Hector Lopez. In very good condition, with moderate creasing to the image portion, heavy overall rippling, a few creases to signed portion, and the signatures a shade or two light but clean and completely readable. Although best remembered for Roger Maris’ and Mickey Mantle’s pursuit of Babe Ruth’s single-season home run record, the 1961 season also boasted one of the greatest teams in baseball history: the same Yankees for whom Maris and Mantle played. The “M & M Boys” hit 115 of the Yanks’ then-record 240 home runs, while Cy Young Award winner Whitey Ford and major-league saves leader Luis Arroyo were the stars of a fine pitching staff. After spending virtually the entire first half of the season in second place, the Yankees blasted past Detroit in mid-season and had effectively sealed their second consecutive AL pennant by Labor Day. They finished the season eight games ahead of the 101–61 Tigers and had little trouble overcoming the Cincinnati Reds in a five-game World Series for the nineteenth World Championship in franchise history. While many signed 1961 team balls and partially signed reunion photos are known to exist, vintage photos of this size and of such completeness are so rare that even diehard Red Sox fans will take notice—for some consider the 1961 Yankees to be the greatest team ever assembled.
