Two Pierce military commissions, including one countersigned by Jefferson Davis

Two items: partially printed DS as president, signed “Franklin Pierce,” one page on vellum, 14 x 16.75, May 25, 1854, appointing Abner Read a lieutenant in the Navy; and a partially printed DS as president, signed “Franklin Pierce” and [Secretary of War] “Jeffer. Davis,” one page on vellum, 12.25 x 16.5, February 9, 1854, appointing Abraham Buford captain in the First Regiment of Dragoons. Both documents are matted and framed together with an unsigned portrait engraving, CSA postage stamp, and bronze medallion to an overall size of 42 x 24.5. In very good to fine condition, with light show-through from [ink?] stains on reverse of Pierce document, and wrinkles, folds (touching signature), slightly irregular ink adhesion, and seal removal remnants to Pierce/Davis document. LOA John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and R&R COA. Oversized.
