Description

One body among millions: Khruschev writes to Stalin on plans for an autopsy

TLS, in Russian, signed by Khruschev in red pencil, one page, 6.75 x 11.25, April 15, 1944. Khruschev writes to Stalin from Moscow. In part: “The professors wanted to perform an autopsy on comrade Vatutin’s body. His wife protested against it. After my conversation with the professors, they agreed not to insist, because, as a result of a prolonged observation of the patient, the cause of death is known precisely, and an autopsy cannot reveal anything new. For those reasons it was agreed not to perform an autopsy. To [carry; crossed out] organize comrade Vatutin’s funeral, a [government; crossed out] commission has been formed….” Accompanied by a full translation. In fine condition, with crossouts and annotations and secretarial annotations, trimmed edges, and mailing fold touching signature. R&R COA.
