Though popular with his subjects for his unpretentious manner and concern for social problems, the king was inwardly troubled. Seeking the affection and understanding denied him by his upbringing, he found an American divorcée, Wallis Simpson, and chose to renounce the throne he held for less than a year in order to marry “the woman I love.” Ballpoint signatures, “Edward Duke of Windsor” and “Wallis Duchess of Windsor,” on an off-white 5.5 x 3.5 card, embossed at the top with the coat of arms.
