ALS signed “O. W. Holmes,” one page both sides, 4.5 x 7, personal letterhead, February 2, 1862. Holmes writes to an unnamed gentleman. In part: “I think very well of the verses. They have and aim and they are smartly and cleverly turned. The clergy are not commonly the best subjects to begin with, as they are sensitive…. That which is honestly said is liable to give offense not present.” Small blot to date and subtle brushing to signature, otherwise fine condition. R&R COA.
