Description

Joining the creative community’s efforts to defeat Nixon in 1968

American author (1925–2006) best known for such modern classics as The Confessions of Nat Turner and Sophie’s Choice. Two items: 1) TLS signed “Bill,” one page, 7.25 x 10.25, personal letterhead, May 22, 1968. Styron writes to Chester Kerr at Yale University Press. In part: “Since Arthur Miller, Cal Lowell, Jules Feiffer and I will be in Oregon on Friday campaigning for McCarthy, I hope you will understand why I can’t accept your kind invitation to come to lunch.” 2) TLS signed “Bill,” one page, 7.25 x 10.25, July 27, 1968. Styron writes again to Kerr. In part: “I am, naturally, interested in knowing the date of our appearance before the Credentials Committee…. I shudder to think of making to trips to Chicago in August, but since fate seems to have committed me to the life of a politician, it looks as if there is no way out. Trust McCarthy and The New York Review of Books to demolish a good summer.” Accompanied by an unsigned carbon of a letter from Kerr to Styron. In fine condition, with a few light wrinkles and staple holes and small paperclip rust stain to one letter. R&R COA.
