Description

Vehemently refuting rumors of an extramarital dalliance: “It is all cruel and monstrous nonsense”

ALS, three pages, 6.75 x 8.75, personal letterhead, no date [probably circa 1910–1911]. Wells writes to “My dear Colles.” In part: “It is alleged that Isabel is a certain person whom I will call Mrs. X. And about Mrs. X and I there are extensive and peculiar scandals. This is so much about that I think it is time I unsealed my lips in the matters. Well, there is a foundation for the Mrs. X. story but it is a very slight one. A close relation of Mrs. X has now become frantic in the matter and has pursued us both with extraordinary exaggerations. I am supposed to be the father of Mrs. X’s child and so forth. It is all cruel and monstrous nonsense. Mrs. X and Mr. X were and are excellent friends with my wife and me. But these scandals came to such a pitch that it was necessary for the two families to agree not to meet or write for two years in spite of the fact that I and Mrs. X have been closely interested in a very promising first novel she is doing. I have under the pressure of the present situation written to the X’s who had send most of the M.S. of The New Machiavelli…. They don’t think there is any solid ground for the charge that Isabel is like Mrs. X.” Wells’ novel The New Machiavelli was published in 1911. In fine condition, with pinholes, a few minor wrinkles, and a subtle hint of soiling. R&R COA.
