Highly important German composer and pianist (1810–1856) whose distinctively lyrical musical language, especially evident in his keyboard works and art songs, made him one of the central figures of the German Romantic tradition. Though he was in his twenties (and already an accomplished pianist) by the time he published his first work, he composed prolifically over the next several decades, producing much instrumental, chamber, vocal, and orchestral music. His productivity and mental health gradually declined, a state likely brought about by mercury poisoning, until his death at the age of fifty-six. Scarce ALS in German, one page, 8.5 x 11, October 6, 1843. Schumann sends three new works to his publisher, asking whether “one or the other, or all three” will be put into print. Though the works in question are unidentified, one likely candidate is the Three String Quartets, Op. 41, completed in the previous year. Several faint intersecting mailing folds (one passing through first name of signature) and a few small spots of very subtle soiling (mentioned only for strictest accuracy), otherwise fine, bright, clean condition.
