AQS, signed “R. W. Emerson” and dated April 26, 1873, four lines generally attributed to Ali ibn Abi Talib (early Islamic leader and son-in-law of the prophet Muhammad; 599–661) on an off-white 8.25 x 10.25 page. In full: “He who has a thousand friends/Has not a friend to spare,/And he who has one enemy/Will meet him everywhere.” Below Emerson’s quotation is another quotation in an unknown hand. Emerson had journeyed to Egypt in December of the previous year. At the time he penned this quotation, one month before his return to America, he was in London, where, on the following day, he saw his longtime friend and correspondent, Thomas Carlyle, for the last time. Brush to first letter and stray tiny ink spot, otherwise bright, crisp, fine condition. LOA John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and R&R COA.
