Description

A wrench in the works? Sherman seeks missing tools in the midst of the Civil War

War-dated ALS signed “W. T. Sherman,” one 3.25 x 4.25 page affixed to a same-sized piece of mat board, August 16, 1863. Sherman writes from “Camp on Black River.” In full: “Refund to Lt. Col. J. Condit Iswith [?] who will report if he knows where these tools are and who has them in possession.” While the header and date are in another hand, the body of the letter was written by Sherman. Matted and framed with a color period engraving to an overall size of 8.75 x 16. The reverse of the frame bears the printed certificate of authenticity and wax seal of noted dealer Charles Hamilton. In very good condition, with mounting as noted, light scattered soiling, and a few faint spots. R&R COA.
