Distinguished American-born artist (1856–1925) who spent most of his career as an expatriate in Europe. While he painted a variety of subjects in various media, his fame rests primarily on his evocative, penetrating society portraits. ALS in French, signed “John S. Sargent,” four pages on two adjoining sheets, 4.5 x 7, personal letterhead, July 1 [no year]. Sargent writes to an unnamed friend. In part (translated): “I am writing to you about the Baron V. whom you had referred to me. I think that the musician, who is his brother or his cousin, has already told me about an exhibition project in London. I assume that your friend D. as well as the Baron are associated with it…. You’re giving me very sad news, and I would like to assure you of my deep sympathy. I remember that in M. you were already very concerned about that, and I was upset to see you in such pain…. I would love to hear you singing again. I have a very good memory of your musical events.” Mild scattered soiling, otherwise fine condition. R&R COA.
