Description

Money for Monet: “I do not sell any canvasses under 6 and 7000 Fr.”

Highly influential French painter (1840–1926), one of the leading figures of the impressionist movement, best known for his evocative, atmospheric views of nature and architecture and for his skill in capturing the subtleties of changing light. ALS in French, one page, 8.5 x 6.5, Giverny Par Vernon Eure letterhead, December 8, 1894. Letter to a gentleman, possibly providing an estimate for two of his earlier works, or possibly two works of another. In full, “ I am hastily responding to your letter even though I do no know the value of the two paintings that you are mentioning. I mean as quality of painting, I think I can tell you that if I owned them I think that I could find a buyer. For the view of Paris at 6000 Fr and at least 4000 for the view of Holland. (These prices are market prices). Maybe they are worth more but what I can tell you for information purposes is that I do not sell any paintings below 6 and 7000 Fr.” Boldly signed at the conclusion in his usual purple ink, “Claude Monet.” Intersecting mailing folds, paperclip and pencil mark to top right and a couple small and unobtrusive spots, otherwise fine condition. A much nicer format of Monet letter than we are used to seeing, with all text on one large page and a nice full signature. Although one cannot tell whether Monet was insulted or embarrassed by the request, either way he was passionate in his response from this neatly penned and emphatically signed response. LOA John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and R&R COA.
