Description

Despotism and diapers: Napoleon writes on troop movements a week after the birth of his son

LS in French, signed “Nap.,” one page both sides, 7.25 x 9, March 29, 1811. Napoleon writes from Paris to an unidentified major general whom he addresses as “My cousin,” mentioning military actions in Bayonne, Portugal, and Vittoria, as well as a number of personnel, including General Caffarelli. Napoleon’s only “legitimate” son, Napoleon Francis Joseph Charles (a.k.a. Napoleon II), was born nine days earlier, on March 20. In very good condition, with very faint show-through of writing, a few folds, thin mounting remnant along one edge of second page, and ink blot with small erosion hole to text affecting one word. The signature is dark, clear, and unaffected. LOA John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and R&R COA.
