Description

Madison presidential check issued just three weeks before the White House burned

Check, 7.25 x 2.5, filled out and signed by Madison as president, payable to R. C. Wrightman or bearer for $66.09, August 1, 1814. In very good condition, with two cancellation cuts to body resulting in a few small areas of paper loss, bisecting vertical fold and scattered mild toning. In 1814, during the War of 1812 much of Washington was burned by British troops in retaliation for burning Upper Canada's Parliament Buildings in the Battle of York leaving the White House gutted. Only the exterior walls remained. As nice a Madison check as you will see from the period and close association with the burning of the White House make this quite desirable. LOA John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and R&R COA.
