ALS, one page, 4.5 x 7, October 1858. Dickens writes from the Royal Hotel, Glasgow, to William Logan (1813–1879), a missionary and lecturer who shared the author’s active interest in causes related to poverty and social welfare. In full: “I am greatly obliged to you for your kind note received this morning, and for its accompanying volumes. Accept my cordial thanks. As the Christmas Carol is a favourite of ours, may I hope that you will do me the favor to come and hear it tonight, if you are not otherwise engaged. Faithfully yours….” Dickens’ timeless novel, first published in 1843, was adapted for the stage in the following year by C. Z. Barnett. Since that time, countless incarnations—special illustrated editions of the book, additional stage adaptations, and multiple screen versions—have lent the work an exclusive cachet not only as a perennial holiday favorite, but as one of the most cherished classics in the history of literature. Very faint mailing folds (one touching “S” of “Charles”), otherwise very fine, stunningly bright condition. Letters in which Dickens mentions his most beloved work—let alone examples in such a superb, visually appealing state of preservation—represent the topmost stratum of Dickensiana. In the spirit of Tiny Tim’s most memorable sentiment, the new owner of this item should feel blessed, indeed! Auction LOA John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and R&R COA.
