American painter and illustrator (1842–1924) best known for his images of animal subjects. Original drawing titled “Rebellion,” possibly a sketch for a larger work, ink on an off-white 11 x 9.25 sheet, signed “Copyright by F. S. Church, N.Y., 1904.” A lengthy caption in the artist’s own hand reads, in part: “My design represents a young girl…. On her knees rests a lion cub which she is decorating with a string of flowers. At her feet is a lioness partially asleep and hiding behind her another cub … cubs have angry expressions.” In very good condition, with light even toning, a few edge chips and small tears, and losses to two corners, affecting a few words of caption. The signature and main part of the image are unaffected and could be displayed most handsomely. R&R COA.
