Garbo gets two weeks off from filming Anna Karenina

DS, one page, 7.25 x 9, October 29, 1927. Document to Garbo from Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer, her employer at the time, informing her of payment made to her and terms of her future contract with MGM; mentions a two week layoff period during the filming of Anna Karenina. In part: “We are enclosing herewith our check for $1,800.67…equivalent to one-sixth of monies due to your account, covering the period of Jan. 1, 1927 to March 23, 1927. This will comply with Mr. Mayer’s instructions and serve to inform you of the exercise of your present option for continued employment for one year, beginning Jan. 1, 1928 to Jan. 12, 1929…Mr. Mayer will not exercise our right to date, pertaining to your layoff period of two weeks without pay during the filming of ‘Anna Karenina’ and that we have the right to extend your contract to Jan. 12, 1928 at $2000 per week, whereupon the exercise of this present option would cover a period of one (1) year.” She has signed in black ink on the line below the words “Agreed and Accepted.” Archivally double-matted and framed with a portrait to an overall size of 23.5 x 17.5. In fine condition, with smudged pencilled writing above the signature, and a few scattered stains with one light larger stain to the top right. Garbo’s signature is as bold as the day she signed.
