Description

On Italian publication of his work

Important Russian/Soviet author and activist (1868–1936). Though his criticism of the Communist government led to a relationship marked by conflict and unease, he was ultimately embraced (though closely monitored) by the Stalinist regime, and Stalin himself was a pallbearer at Gorki’s funeral. LS in French, signed (in Cyrillic) “M. Gorki,” one page both sides, 5.5 x 8.25, October 23, no year [envelope postmarked 1907]. Gorki writes from Capri to publisher Gino Righini, directing him to his European representative in Berlin for information on Italian rights to The Prison and promising to send Righini an unpublished article for his paper. Accompanied by the original mailing envelope. Tiny marginal spot, minor brushing to signature, and subtle show-through of writing, otherwise fine, bright condition. LOA John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and R&R COA.
