Description

Don’t cry for them, Argentina: letters from Juan and Eva Peron

Juan Peron was president of Argentina from 1946 to 1955 and again from 1973 to 1974; his charismatic and ambitious wife, Eva, was the subject of the hit musical Evita. Lot of two items: TLS, signed “Juan Peron,” one page, 6.5 x 8.75, Eva Peron letterhead, June 13, 1955. An untranslated letter, written just three months before his overthrow, seeking donations for the Eva Peron Foundation (Eva died in 1952); and a TLS, signed “Maria Eva D[uarte] de Peron,” one page, 5.75 x 8.75, Eva Peron Foundation letterhead, June 3, 1947. An untranslated letter seeking donations, written a month after her twenty-eighth birthday and a year after her husband assumed office. Accompanied by the original mailing envelope from Juan’s letter. In fine condition, with even toning and usual mailing folds to both (not affecting signatures) and tiny corner chip to Eva’s letter. This full form of Eva’s signature is rather uncommonly encountered. R&R COA.
