Titanic survivor. ALS, two neatly penned loose-leaf pages, 6.25 x 6.75, May 3, 1982. ALS and hand-written transcript of an article written about Drew. Drew writes at the top, “The events of the last two weeks have been such that I have told my ‘story’ innumerable times…Now I am being deluged with mail…What I am going to do is copy for you the best which has been written. It is by Sean Code of the Sun, a Westerly newspaper.” Drew goes on to copy the article which reads, in part, “There was an explosion, steam, and then a flash of light. After that nothing was visible. But I could hear the cries of people across the water…In the original book, I was listed as drowned…He explained. When the Carpathia, a liner out of N. Y. arrived on the scene, the young children were hoisted aboard en masse and ‘dumped out on the deck.’ His aunt and other adults were brought aboard individually…Being temporarily separated from his aunt, young master Drew, two weeks after his birthday, was not immediately identified as a survivor. His uncle did perish, with 1,634 other persons…He remembers ‘a thud and cessation of motion,’ unusual deep in the bowels of the ship where their second class cabin was located…Drew planned nothing special for this anniversary, preferring to leave the disaster where it belongs, in the history books.” Signed at the conclusion “Marshall Drew, a Titanic survivor.” Accompanied by the original mailing envelope and another clipped newspaper article. In fine condition, with two horizontal mailing folds and some mild edge toning. R&R COA.
