Associate Justice of the Supreme Court from 1916 to 1939. TLS, one page, 8 x 10.5, personal letterhead, September 16, 1910. Brandeis writes to C. C. Hitchcock in Ware, Massachusetts. In full: “I wish to thank you for your very kind letter of the 7th, which reached me during the hearings on the Railroad Freight Advance, which has developed many matters in which I am sure you will be very much interested.” The case in question, involving proposed rate increases, thrust Brandeis into the national spotlight for the first time. In the words of one historian: “Brandeis startled the proceedings by maintaining that railroad costs could be reduced by scientific efficiency methods…. By a single stroke, [he] had advanced scientific management more than would have otherwise been achieved in the next quarter century.” In very good condition, with a few faint stains to blank portion and mailing folds (one touching signature; another with separation, the repair showing through). The signature itself is dark and unaffected. R&R COA.
