Description

Promising to repay his primary backer just months before the War of 1812

Manuscript DS, one page, 6.25 x 2.5, May 11, 1812. A manuscript promissory note in Fulton’s hand, wherein “Sixty days after date I promise to Robert R. Livingston Esqr. on his order Eight Thousand dollars value received.” Livingston (1746–1813) was a delegate to the Continental Congress and, as Chancellor of New York, the man who administered the Oath of Office at Washington’s first inauguration. After meeting Fulton in Paris, he became the inventor’s partner and principal financial backer. Neat cut cancellations (away from signature) a few tiny edge tears, and a touch of mild scattered soiling, otherwise fine, visually appealing condition. LOA John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and R&R COA.
