Western author and an avid fisherman. ALS signed “Pearl” [Grey’s birth name was Pearl Zane Gray], one page, 8.25 x 10.5, February 17. Letter to his wife regarding his stolen trunk. In part, “Well, it’s finally happened. I woke up this morning on the train feeling that some mistake might have been made yesterday in checking my baggage…My trunk had been sent off with someone else. It is full of all my valuable stuff and over $200 worth of things I bought in Mexico…No one peaks English here; I can’t make myself understood, and I can’t go on without my trunk…And I am simply sick. This is the one time when I relaxed any usual vigilance, and I certainly got it good. I have only one chance, and that is that the other man is honest. But it’s a forlorn hope, from the size & looks of his baggage. What a miserable farce this whole trip has been. I wish I were home.” Accompanied by the original mailing envelope, addressed in Grey’s hand to “Mrs. Zane Grey, New York City.” In fine condition, with expected folds, some scattered light creases and wrinkles, mostly to lower right, one lightly affecting signature.
